Netflix’s new projects from Turkey, from Midnight to Hot Head, from Bird Flight to Uysallar at Pera Palace!

Netflix is adding to its repertoire and expanding its archive of movies and TV series by adding new projects in Turkey. Having offered productions like Hakan: The Protector, Atiye, Bir Başkadır and Fatma to audiences all over the world, Netflix is currently preparing for several new projects to be produced in Turkey. These productions, which feature impressive artists, will meet with Netflix’s audience in the coming months.

Among Netflix Turkey’s domestic productions are: Sıcak Kafa (Hot Head) directed by Mert Baykal  and  Umur Turagay; a Tolga Karaçelik project starring Kivanc Tatlitug and Özge Özpirinçci;  Uysallar directed by Onur Saylak, and Cem Yılmaz ‘s Erşan Kuneri, a sit-com series which he created, directed and starred in.

Below you can find the list we have compiled of Netflix’s Turkish-made projects in the works.

Sıcak Kafa (Hot Head)

Osman Sonant, Hazal Subaşı, Şevket Çoruh, Tilbe Saran, Kubilay Tunçer, Gonca Vuslateri, Özgür Emre Yıldırım, Zerrin Sümer, Erdem Akakçe, Şebnem Hassanisoughi, Hakan Gerçek, Cüneyt Uzunlar, are featured in Sıcak Kafa directed by Mert Baykal  and  Umur Turagay.  Also included are Barış Yıldız, Furkan Kalabalık, Arda Anarat  and Haluk Bilginer. Timur Savcı is the producer of this dystopian adventure story, which consists of eight episodes. Mert Baykal wrote the screenplay of the series, adapted from Afşin Kum’s novel of the same name; His co-authors include Zafer Külünk, Gökhan Şeker and Mujgan Ferhan Şensoy.

Sıcak Kafa, which has begun filming, takes place in a world turned upside down by an epidemic of insanity transmitted from mind to mind through language and speech. The only person in this dystopian world who is mysteriously unaffected by this disease is Murat Siyavuş, a former linguist. Learning that he is wanted by the Epidemic Control Agency, which is famous for its brutality, Murat is forced to flee from the liberated area where he’s hiding to chase the secret of his “hot head” -the legacy of the disease- in the mysterious burning corridors of Istanbul.

Bir Denizaltı Hikâyesi (A Submarine Story)

Özge Özpirinçci, Meriç Aral, Ertan Saban, Ece Çeşmioğlu and Onur Ünsal are in the cast of the new Netflix series directed by Tolga Karaçelik, in which Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ gives life to a researcher working in a submarine.  The series is under the leadership of Jason George and the writers of this action-adventure series are Atasay Koç, Cansu Çoban and Sami Berat Marçalı. Umut Aral (The Protector, Love 101) sits in the director’s chair.

The series, produced by OGM Pictures, tells the story of Arman, a free-spirited dive instructor and marine biologist who is preparing to join a research mission under the submarine. As a result of a natural disaster that hits the world, Arman and his science team must board a military submarine to survive. While trying to figure out what’s going on, Arman and his crew investigate the real mission of this military submarine. Will he ultimately succeed in rescuing himself, his crew and, indeed, much more?

The series now known as “A Submarine Story” and is expected to meet with audiences this year.

Uysallar

Unbeknownst by his family, Architect Oktay Uysal begins to lead a punk life. At the same time his wife, two children and father are also trying to establish their own secret world. The Uysal family home is full of lies, and Oktay has a prison to build. Is it possible to be yourself with your family or does everyone need a second life?

Uysallar will be directed by Onur Saylak, produced by Ay Yapım, and written by Hakan Günday.

Pera Palas’ta Gece Yarısı (Midnight at Pera Palace)

Adapted from Charles King’s award-winning book of the same name, “Midnight at Pera Palace”  will be brought to life by Karga Seven Pictures, a Red Arrow Studios company. Emre Şahin  from Karga Seven will direct the production which is written by Elif Usman. Hazal Kaya has the leading role in the eight episode series which also stars Selahattin Paşalı. The series is about the encounter of Esra, a young journalist, with the legendary Pera Palace Hotel in Istanbul. Assigned to write about the hotel, Esra accidentally discovers that one of the historic rooms is a door to 1919. She travels back in time and gets caught in a political conspiracy against Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey. Now Esra, together with the cunning hotel manager Ahmet, has to protect the flow of Turkey’s history and its future. However, as soon as Esra meets the handsome and mysterious Halit, the owner of Istanbul’s craziest club, she realizes that nothing is as it seems in 1919 Istanbul and that no one is who he says he is.

Kuş Uçuşu (Bird Flight)

Kuş Uçuşu which tells about the collision between generation X (who are still in positions of authority) and the new generation Z, was written by the popular writer Meriç Acemi, the creator of Aşk 101, a Netflix favorite. Birce Akalay , Miray Daner , İrem Sak and İbrahim Çelikkol are in the cast of the series, which is produced by Ay Yapım .

While generation X is trying to understand the new world, social media, new channels and business lines, they are not aware of the real big change. Perspectives, approaches and achieving goals are different now. As we climb to the top, we will follow Aslı, who tries to “bird flight” (fly through) instead of relying on the virtue of hard work. The story will question whether Aslı, who is driven by her goal and struggling to sit at the head of the table, can win with the methods of the new world.

Kod Adı: Kulüp (Code Name: Club)

The series, produced by O3 Medya together with Saner Ayar and Ayşe Durmaz, is directed by Zeynep Günay Tan and Seren Yüce. The script of the series is written by the scriptwriters team consisting of Ayşin Akbulut, Serkan Yörük, Bengü Ucuncu and Rana Denizer, under the leadership of Necati Şahin.

Set in 1955 Istanbul and starring Gökçe Bahadır, Barış Arduç and Salih Bademci, the series tells the life adventure of Matilda, an ex-convict working in the revolutionary nightclub of the time, and her daughter Rasel who was unaware of her existence until the day she was released from prison. On the one hand, Matilda will try to mend her relationship with her daughter Rasel and keep her away from Pera’s troublesome handsome Fistik İsmet; On the other hand, she will try to manage the egos of her nightlife colleagues, her brave boss Orhan, the jealous manager Çelebi and the visionary artist Selim. A paradise for customers and a hell for employees, the Club will take on a whole new spirit with the arrival of Matilda; it will turn into a home for our characters, each of whom is the “other” of their own story. Perhaps the most beautiful family is the one formed by the homeless.

Ersan Kuneri

Cmylmz Fikirsanat undertakes the production of the sitcom series in which Cem Yılmaz has created, directs and stars in. Here is the introduction of the series, in which Yılmaz will bring the character of Erşan Kuneri, whom we first saw on the big screen, to the small screen:

Erşan Kuneri is wreaking havoc in the erotic cinema of the 70s. The idea that everything is fine, we should try other genres, just as we were successful in erotic cinema when we were in good spirits, industry partners Alev, Altın Oran, Miki Muammer, Seyyal, Kaya Akın (a.k.a İbrahim Tumtum), Firdevs and Payro Kemal decide to run a radical film marathon…Will Erşan Kuneri enter Italian romantic era from Iranian cinema, will he shift from teen slasher horrors to social dramas, will he race (horse?) in medieval revenge movies, or will he wink at Hong Kong?”

Beni Çok Sev (Love Me So Much)

Beni Çok Sev (Love Me So Much) is the signature of Mehmet Ada Öztekin, the director of the movie Miracle in the 7th Ward. Sarp Akkaya and Songül Öden, in the lead, are accompanied by Ercan Kesal, Aleyna Özgeçen, Füsun Demirel, Güner Özkul and Ushan Çakır.

On the one hand there is Sedat, who works as a guard in a closed prison in Konya, and on the other hand there is Musa, who is a prisoner in the same prison. One day with new orders given to Sedat, two men free Musa from prison for a day and set out to Musa’s village to visit his daughter. For the first time in 14 years, Musa sees his ex-wife and mother and meets his daughter Yonca who is like a stranger to him. Even though they are strangers to each other, for a day father and daughter have a great time as if 14 years haven’t passed. But there is something that bothers Moses, something wrong, a feeling. His mother, who has Alzheimer’s, comes to him at night as if she had never been sick, and suddenly explains a painful truth that will hit him in the deepest part. Yonca is not his real daughter, his daughter was killed. Moses must return to prison, but no matter how much it hurts, he has to find out what happened to his daughter.

Biz Kimden Kaçıyorduk Anne (Who were we running from, Mom?)

Who were we running from, Mom?

Although Biz Kimden Kaçıyorduk Anne has not been officially announced by Netflix, it is known that the series has been in preparation for a while. Adapted from Perihan Mağden’s book of the same name, the script is written by Ertan Kurtulan, known for TV series such as İçerde and Poyraz Karayel. The series will be directed by Ceylan Özgün Özçelik  who made a name for herself with her first feature Kaygı, which won awards at national and international festivals. The series will focus on the traumatic story of a mother and a daughter.

The novel by Perihan Mağden’s Who Are We Running Away From, Mother? focuses on the story of a mother and her daughter, step by step to a bitter end. In the book, the secrets of the past are discovered during the escape of a girl who has to flee from city to city, from hotel to hotel, and her extraordinary mother, who is unlike her. The novel depicts the relationship between a mother raising her child alone, and her daughter, with the ebb and flow of feelings of love and hatred.

Although it has not been confirmed by Netflix yet, according Birsen Altuntaş from TV100, Melisa Sözen who recently appeared in the series Kirmizi Oda (Red Room) starring Binnur Kaya, will take the lead role in Netflix’s new series, Biz Kimden Kaçıyorduk Anne.

Dizis, Turkish films, Turkish daily series, with their deep emotional stories bring people together and create international communities through social media.

This review is a collaboration between two women who “met” through one such community of the Turkish daily series Kan Çiçekleri, otherwise known as Blood Flowers, produced by Sevda Kaygısız leading a team of at least 8 skilled writers, mostly women, on Kanal 7, a nationwide Islamic TV Channel.

Penned by Dr. Patti Feuereisen & Vinita Temple ~ a practicing psychologist and a human rights lawyer ~ their analytical depth in the understanding of the culture and human dynamics is artful.
